Course Description:

This year we will work together to improve our reading, vocabulary, comprehension, and inferencing skills. We will cover different genres and skills throughout the year to prepare for our ELAR STAAR test!!!

English College Academic Readiness (ECAR) is an 8th-grade English course designed to emphasize college and academic readiness including

  • preparation for college entrance assessments, 

  • advanced academic vocabulary,

  • advanced academic writing,

  • research, and

  • critical thinking skills

  • creative projects and presentations

The class may incorporate activities such as guest speakers, college-based activities, and/or online class participation components.**STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS COURSE ARE ALIGNED WITH TEKS, STAAR English I, CCRS, AND PSAT.*

 

As per UISD Student Code of Conduct: (www.uisd.net), students are expected to:

  • Bring all necessary supplies to class

  • Use the syllabus as a tool for keeping informed of assignments

  • Maintain a planner for organization

  • Participate in class accordingly

  • Maintain grades above a 70

  • Produce quality, advanced-level coursework at all times

  • Maintain academic integrity 

  • Use appropriate language at all times

  • Be courteous to all members of the class, including guest speakers

  • Respect EVERY and ALL opinions voiced

  • Keep a positive attitude toward the class

  • Avoid gossip and rumors, especially via social media

  • Avoid eating/drinking (except water) in class

  • Adhere to all other campus policies, rules and expectations

Grades:

As per UISD requirements: 

  • Progress reports will go out every third week and report cards every six weeks.

  • Missing assignments will be assigned a zero, not a 50.

  • According to the UISD Student Code of Conduct, 70 and above is passing.

  • Failing the six weeks will result in loss of privileges from clubs (No Pass, No Play), including non-UIL clubs.

  • Refer to the UISD Student Code of Conduct via www.uisd.net 

Classroom Procedures:

Enter the classroom: Quietly, walk to your assigned seat, and start on classwork.

Restroom: Permission may be obtained during student work time to go to the restroom (not during instruction or the first/last 15 minutes of class).

Dress Code: Must follow school policy.

Technology: Must follow school policy.

Follow Instructions: Listen to directions, read assignments, and ask questions.

Teacher dismisses students: You will be dismissed by the teacher, not the bell. Wait silently to be dismissed.

 

Classroom Expectations:

Be Respectful: Use appropriate language.  Be respectful and wait for your turn.

Be Orderly:  Follow directions.  Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

Be Accountable:  Be ready to learn.  Always have the required materials.

Be Responsible:  Be on time.  Complete all assignments.
